With the collapse of the Hittite Empire, the Late Hittite Principalities maintained the Hittite culture in the South-eastern Anatolia as small kingdoms. These kingdoms could not survive against the Late Assyrian Empire in the 8th century BCE.

IMPROMEVENT IN THE IRON AGE

Local principalities united under Urartu’s reign came to a strong position in Eastern Anatolia in the 9th century BCE. Before the 8th century BCE, Phrygians from the Balkans established a powerful kingdom, first in Western Anatolia and later in the Sakarya River basin. Lydian, Carian and Lycian civilizations were in Western Anatolia. Meanwhile, Aeolian and Ionian city-states were experiencing the Archaic Period.
