HELLENISTIC PERIOD (330 BCE – 30 BCE)

Alexander the Great established a grand empire stretching from Macedonia to India after the Eastern Campaign. During this period, Hellenistic culture emerged from the fusion of Hellenic and Eastern cultures. Hellenic culture and language reached as far as Southwest Asia, while at the same time, local practices and institutions were adopted by the influence of local cultures.

ART IN THE HELENISTIC PERIOD

The political and social change of the Hellenistic Period is also reflected in the period’s artworks of the art show significant progress in the 3rd century BCE. Copies of Classical Period art began to be made. One of the most famous artists of the period was Lysippos, who gave works of art in sculpture. The sculpture schools of the period were in Pergamon and Tralleis (Aydın). The name of Apelles, who became famous for making portraits of Alexander, survives until today as the most important painter of the period.
