2- Panagia Phaneromeni Ayazma (Ayvalık Ayazması)

The holy spring of Panagia Phaneromeni is located in the center of Ayvalık. Ayazma is a place for sacred and curative water springs. Panagia meaning “Most Holy” is a name given to Mary in Orthodoxy, and Phaneromeni means “revealed.”

It was opened to the public in 2018 with the project of reviving and restoring the worn-out Ayazma building.

According to the Orthodox belief, holy water can cure many diseases, and the prayers of those who drink it are accepted. Sacred springs are structures that served as healing centers in the past. In 1852, a statue of the Virgin Mary and the holy water spring was found in excavations where the structure is located today. A small sacred spring was built in 1867 on the place where it was thought to have a similar structure before, but that building only lasted for a short time. The building, which has survived to the present day, was built in 1890.
